This traditional ceremony is still preserved until now by the residents of the Tengger tribe on the 14th day of the month of Kasodo according to the traditional calendar of the Tengger people who are adherents of Hindu Dharma teachings. That’s the reason this event is always the target of tourists who don’t want to miss all the processions carried out during the ritual.

The Origin of Kasada Ceremony in Bromo

The legend of Yadnya Kasada comes from the story of a husband and wife who live near Mount Bromo, namely Roro Anteng, the daughter of Prabu Brawijaya (King of Majapahit) and Jaka Seger, the son of a Brahmin from Kediri who has never been blessed with descent despite being married for years.

Finally they begged Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa and promised that if it was granted they would sacrifice one of them. And after that Roro Anteng became pregnant and gave birth to 25 children. After several years they didn’t keep their promise and broke their promise to Dewa. And Dewa was angry and bring disaster to Mount Bromo to eliminate one of their children named Raden Kusuma. He is the savior of his other brother.

Since then the descendants of Rara Anteng and Jaka Seger have always made offerings every 14th day of Kasada month, which is now known as the Kasada Ceremony or Yadnya Kasada which aims to invoke the safety and blessings of the hyang widhi as well as commemorate their ancestors, namely Roro Anteng and Joko Seger. That’s why the residents of the Tengger tribe believe that Mount Bromo is a sacred mountain.

The Yadnya Kasada ritual was held for generations a few years ago since the Majapahit kingdom still existed in its day, usually the Tengger tribe people carry out this ritual at Puten Temple which is in the sea of sand, precisely at the foot of Mount Bromo, they will walk and bring offerings in large quantities in the form of fruits crops and livestock then all the offerings will be thrown into the crater as an offering to the spirits of ancestors and an introduction to hope for a more prosperous life.

In order for the Kasada ritual to take place solemnly, there are procedures that must be carried out sequentially, namely Puja purkawa, Manggala ceremony, Wrestling of the people, Tri Sandiya, Muspa, Bija distribution, Diksa widhi, Presentation of offerings at Bromo crater.
